Terms

Standing is a free tool for running a competition among friends. These are the terms you agree to by using it, in plain English rather than the other kind.

Last updated:

The short version

  • Standing runs the admin of a competition. It is not a bookmaker and takes no bets.
  • No money passes through the site. Any stake is between the players, and the person who set the cup up is responsible for it.
  • Where there is a stake, everyone in that cup must be 18 or over. Enforcing that is the organiser’s job, not the site’s.
  • It is free and run by one person in their spare time. Treat it as such.

What Standing is

A place to run a competition that used to live in a spreadsheet and a group chat. It holds the entries, takes the picks, applies the rules the same way for everyone, and shows the result. That is the whole product.

What Standing is not

  • Not a bookmaker, a betting service or a gambling operator. Standing takes no bets and offers no odds.
  • Not a payment service. It cannot take, hold, transfer or pay out money, and has no way of knowing whether anybody actually paid.
  • Not a referee. Where players disagree, the organiser decides.

Your account

Keep your sign-in to yourself — anyone who can open your email can get into your account. What happens under your account is treated as done by you. Use a name your fellow players would recognise, and not one designed to impersonate somebody else.

Stakes, and who is responsible for them

A cup can be for nothing, or it can have a stake the players agree between themselves. Where there is a stake:

  • The money never touches Standing. The organiser collects it and the organiser pays it out, exactly as they would have without the site.
  • Everyone in that cup must be 18 or over. Standing does not and cannot verify anyone’s age.
  • The organiser — the person who created the cup, or whoever is administering it — is responsible for making sure every player meets that, and that running it is lawful where they and their players are.
  • Any mark in the app showing somebody as having paid is the organiser’s own note to themselves. It is not a receipt, not proof of payment, and not something Standing stands behind.
  • If the pot goes missing or the payout is disputed, that is between the players. Standing holds no money and can return none.

A cup with no stake in it is open to anyone aged 16 or over.

If you are running a cup

You set it up, you decide who is invited, you decide the stake if there is one, and you settle the arguments. You are also responsible for the people you invite — which is the whole of the age rule above. In return the site shows every player the same information at the same time, which is the part that was hard on a spreadsheet.

Using it fairly

  • Do not try to break it, overload it, scrape it or get at data that is not yours.
  • Do not use it to harass, abuse or impersonate anybody.
  • Do not automate your way around a deadline or a rule the rest of your cup is playing by.

An account being used to harm other players can be removed. That is a last resort and you would hear why.

It comes with no promises

This is a free side project, not a service with a support desk behind it. It may be unavailable, it may lose a deadline to a bug, features may change, and it may one day stop. Where something matters — a real pot, a real argument — keep your own record. As far as the law allows, Standing is provided as it is, with no guarantee, and is not liable for losses arising from using it. Nothing here removes a liability that cannot lawfully be removed.

Fixtures and results

Fixtures, kick-off times and results are entered by hand and can be wrong. When one is corrected, anything that followed from it is corrected too. If a round looks wrong to you, say so before the next one starts.

Ending it

Delete your profile whenever you like and you are out of everything. If you are the only person in a cup, that cup goes with you; if you are not, it carries on without you and somebody else takes over running it.

If these change

The date at the top moves when they do. Carrying on using Standing after a change means the new version applies.

The legal bit

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and its courts.
